Apolo is one of the oldest and most beloved donkeys at our sanctuary. He carries years of hardship with quiet dignity — a true survivor who still has a spark in his eyes.
His Story
Apolo endured unthinkable cruelty at the hands of his former owner. He was gelded with only a knife — no anesthesia, no pain relief. His ears were cut to mark him as property. When he grew too old and weak to work, his owner abandoned him on the streets and stabbed him in the belly, leaving him to bleed alone.
Apolo bled for more than 15 days on the streets. His owner even tried to push him into traffic, hoping a truck would finish the job. Compassionate bystanders intervened and saved him.
We rescued Apolo on August 22, 2021. He was in critical condition — belly swollen from infection, barely able to stand, starving and dehydrated. But his eyes held a quiet will to live. We held onto that spark, and today, Apolo enjoys peaceful days at the sanctuary surrounded by gentle companions and the safety he was once denied.
