On June 18th, 2021, we rescued senior Safira along with four other donkeys — Jade, Turquesa, Rubi, and Topázio. So all together, we had a senior, a pegnant mother & her unborn foal, and a mama & baby pair.
These five gentle souls were being beaten and chased by a group of boys, who thought it was entertaining to make them run in fear.
Since that day, Safira has found safety, love, and peace at our sanctuary, but caring for an elderly donkey like Safira is not easy or inexpensive. Because of her age, she requires special senior grains that are softer and easier to digest, and we have to mix them with supplements to make sure she receives the nutrition her body needs. Her diet, medications, and routine vet care cost more than most of our younger residents, but every bit of it helps her stay comfortable and healthy in her golden years.
