Sunny’s story is heartbreaking, but it’s also one of hope. In August 2022, we were urgently contacted by the veterinary hospital we work with. A young horse had been brought in with a fractured leg after being forced to compete in the brutal Brazilian sport of vaquejada, where horses are pushed to their physical limits in the name of entertainment. His owner couldn’t (or wouldn’t) pay for his care and was already trying to sell him off to the highest bidder, only caring to make a profit.
There was no time to lose. If Sunny had been sold, he would have been forced back into vaquejada, or worse, euthanized for being “no longer useful.” Thanks to a wave of compassion from our community, we raised the funds to buy Sunny and bring him to safety.
Today, Sunny is a completely different horse.
He’s thriving in our sanctuary, surrounded by a loving herd and finally free to just be a horse.
